The Skateboard Urn Base

Urns are valuable and important options to store the cremains of loved ones in a respectful way. With the right urn, you can help to honor the legacy of a person who's passed away, and also give a nod to something they really loved during their lifetime. With 3D-printed custom urn options, you can have almost any style of urn created for your memorialization needs.

About the Skateboard Urn Base

This particular build wasn't actually an urn. Instead, it was an urn base that was designed to hold a more standard urn containing the cremains. The goal with this urn base was to add color and beauty to the simple urn that was being used, and the rich colors and custom engraving added a lovely finishing touch and an ongoing reminder of the importance of loved ones.

Inspiration

Our customer's late son loved skateboarding, so it was important for her to have a way to represent that as she memorialized him. The skateboard urn base was the perfect option, as it allowed her to have a simple, standard urn and still showcase her son's love for skateboarding.

Process

Creating the Model

Creating any urn model starts with several different software programs designed for 3D modeling. This takes time, and we're dedicated to making sure the final product is exactly what the customer is looking for. Once the model is created and the customer gives approval, we start on the printing process.

Printing

The size of the 3D print being created can affect the printing process, and sometimes it can take as long as 24 hours. With a simpler design like the skateboard urn base, the printing time was short, and we actually had room in our printer's powder bed to print other small orders simultaneously.

Post-Printing Process

After printing is complete there is clean-up, hardening, and quality checking. We carefully go through each and every step in the process to ensure that we're not missing anything that could negatively affect the quality of the finished product.

Painting

It's important to us that our painting is all done in house. Our detailing team is in constant communication with both our customers and our 3D printing and graphics department so that we can use the right colors and make the urn look how our customers imagine it. For this urn base, we wanted the black tires to stand out against the deep, rich red of the skateboard itself.

Final Touches

After the urn base was painted, it changed hands from our detailing team to our engraving team. Our customer had us engrave her son's information and the statement "Family Will Always Roll With You" on the top of the skateboard. Finally, the urn base was ready to be shipped.

Even simple designs that don't have a lot of delicate or detailed requirements still take time and are very important. We made sure that this one was meticulously painted, and that the engraving and center indent were neat, clean, and precise.

Behind the Scenes

Despite the simplicity of this print, a lot of care went into painting it and prepping it for our customer. Careful attention to detail provided a quality finished product for our customer to remember her son.
