If
you are planning on traveling with cremains in an urn and keepsakes,
then there are a few things that you should know about the requirements
of Homeland Security and specifically the TSA or Transportation
Security Administration. All urns must be able to be scanned. You
may feel the best way to go is to have a temporary container with
all the cremains. This is only necessary if the urn you have chosen
is not scan able, and surprisingly, most are.
Urns made of wood, glass, plastic or non-lead lined ceramic are
allowed as carry-on baggage. If the container is made of a material
that generates an opaque image and prevents the security screener
from clearly being able to see what is inside, then the container
will not be allowed through the security checkpoint. If the x-rayed
image is opaque then the next option is to transport the cremains
in the belly of the plane as checked baggage. The crematory container
will undergo testing for explosive devices and, if cleared, will
be permitted as checked baggage.
In respect to the deceased, under no circumstances will a screener
open the container at any time, even if the passenger request that
this be done. You may find it is easier to purchase a scan able
urn and pack your keepsakes, then fill then at your destination.
Finding comfort in loss seems intangible, but the inevitable force
and power of your love for those who have passed will guide you to
a peaceful place where your loss is transformed to the light that
will shine in your heart and soul forever. The exquisite warmth of
memory will eventually provide comfort and support in the realness
of whom and what you miss. The healing process that follows the death
of someone you love is a loss you never get over, rather, one learns
to assimilate and live with the death. Sustaining your memory of them
through memorial gestures and choosing the perfect remembrance to
encapsulate them with is an important part of healing and acceptance
of this hard reality.
